On return to my newspaper: And how to win at it by JINKS...
Never use a shooter piece until the puzzle can be completed immediately. The more free squares the easier to move pieces.
If no symbol can be placed on an empty square, try to swap so every row and column has a pair of all the other symbols. So all the same symbols appear in the row and column and enclosure. If different symbols appear in both sets that is what a I call logical knot and you need to untie it. (See worked example for more explanation.)
Move anything that can move to get a feel for the puzzle.
Don't worry if there was a quicker solution, some of the most fun I have had with this game was getting out of a mess I made taking over 100 times longer to solve. LOL.
Worked Example to go with flash film.
I start by playing with the puzzle. Nothing inspired just seeing any pieces that move. A kiwi, cherry and kiwi move. But a cherry can't move and gets my attention.
I look at the two empty squares. Both are logical knots because the squares are no go zones - as all 6 symbols are present. You can see both cherry and kiwi are there either on the row or the column. Each symbol should be on all adjacent lines or not at all. Fixing this problem will untie the knots.
I come up with the chain that unties the knot. A chain is entered by clicking on the pieces exactly the same way as a normal move to an empty square.
After the chain does its pretty shuffle. I just insert the kiwi and cherry pieces to finish.
The flash film has play and rewind controls. Film also available as windows media(.avi) download. (This file won't work on a PocketPC Media Player so use it on your destop or get BetaPlayer PocketTV etc.)
